Who is RAC?
The RAC provides complete peace of mind to more than 12.7 million personal and business members in the UK – catering for them across the board from breakdown assistance to insurance and a range of other motoring services. In 2020, the RAC's patrol force attended 2.2m breakdowns.
Founded as the Automobile Club of Great Britain in 1897, the organisation was the first to introduce uniformed patrols in 1901. And in 1907 it became the Royal Automobile Club after being given royal approval by King Edward VII. Over the years the RAC has innovated to meet the needs of its members. In 1912, the RAC introduced roadside emergency telephone boxes and in 2001 it became the first breakdown company to develop a recovery trailer that could be deployed from the back of one of its vans.
Today, all RAC patrols are equipped with the latest mobile diagnostic equipment – RAC Scan - which enables them to identify faults that would otherwise need to be dealt with by a garage. As standard, every RAC van carries more than 500 parts and tools which patrols use to fix four out of five breakdowns on the spot.
With its headquarters in Walsall in the West Midlands, and offices in Manchester and Bristol, the RAC employs approximately 4,000 dedicated staff.

RAC policy details
RAC offers a range of cover from comprehensive, third-party only, third-party fire and theft. New customers can then choose from two levels of comprehensive cover, standard RAC car insurance and RAC car insurance plus.
The standard RAC car insurance covers the following:
- Courtesy car
- Repairs guaranteed for three years at approved RAC garages
- Personal accident benefit.
The RAC car insurance plus covers the following:
- Vandalism cover
- Child seat cover
- Increased personal accident benefit
- Courtesy car
- Uninsured driver promise
- Travel home after accident
- Repairs guaranteed for three years at approved RAC garages.
